At the end of last school year, my SMART Board was replaced by a brand new SMART Panel. Now, I consider myself pretty tech savvy but this was a whole new beast. A former colleague who is now a district tech guru offered some training. She sent me a link called, "You Can Book Me," to schedule a time for her to come to my building. Essentially, this site allows for other people to schedule time with you when it is convenient for them and when your schedule allows. Brilliant!!! </span></p><p><span style="font-family: Bubbler One; font-size: medium;">I instantly started thinking of how I could use this awesome program and classroom counseling lessons came to mind. OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!! I cannot express how wonderful it is to have this task off my plate!! I simply make sure that times that I cannot have lessons like meetings, days off, half days, and other things I cannot miss are on my Outlook calendar. You Can Book Me will only show the times that are available per your parameters (start and end of the school day, length of lessons, days of the week lessons will be, etc.). I send an email 2 weeks before the following month for teachers to schedule their lessons. Not only does this release me from the daunting task of scheduling 189 lessons while avoiding everyone's' specials, intervention, lunch and recess, assemblies, days off, and the countless other obligations, it gives the teachers to flexibility to schedule around their classroom's schedules and needs. I highly recommend giving You Can Book Me a shot! I currently use the free version and it has been working great for me. There is a paid version that has more features but so far I haven't had the need for the extra features.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: Bubbler One; font-size: medium;">I am always looking for ways to work smarter not harder, so if you have any recommendations, I would love to hear them. </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Bubbler One; font-size: x-large;">If you try You Can Book Me, tell me what you think!</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://youcanbook.me/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="88" data-original-width="407" height="86" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjRSmgr3ndGe8834Hwjw8OtvUW6wpiFJ-hfV75pgSmBn__QvPx1OGrhzzSA9u_JJxWHloh7fYcVsL7L3EZeRyZyKlTJRJzOwSMuU5egpEtL9zwdDzVUxUc7MRpxoGyOTmtZvPzSxYnFz-ArRGmj66DwBt-L2ONqJXgDVRcGkxzqeecaZ0BSz3vm1Vn/w400-h86/You%20can%20book%20me.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Hanselor the Counselorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07797521737992016752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2543226760950597089.post-62340762221705783672022-08-12T18:10:00.001-05:002022-09-23T18:49:22.722-05:00I'M BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<p>After a VERY long hiatus, I am going to try to get back into the swing of my blog. <span style="font-size: large;">Over the years, I have searched for a weekly planner that suited my needs. I have been unsuccessful so in my spare time 😂, I created one. I wanted one that had 15 minute increments and only Monday-Friday. The blank space under each day of the week is to write in the date. I use an 8.5in x 11in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JQXHSWF/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?pd_rd_i=B07D2TZ7L9&pd_rd_w=oRSL5&pf_rd_p=48d372c1-f7e1-4b8b-9d02-4bd86f5158c5&pd_rd_wg=g4gth&pf_rd_r=K6N95PHC1TFMYRR0ZBXM&pd_rd_r=b427e812-4c4f-40d0-b5fe-7abb564548b5&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFaRUNQQ1dTWTNRSTYmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA1NzU4MjAySEJCWjFaVzczMUxJJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAwMTgwMjUzU0NCRVczSTBBQklXJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1">Arc Notebook System</a>. I love this system because I am able to move pages around as I see fit. I also purchased the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Staples-Desktop-Paper-8-Sheet-Capacity/dp/B00BJH0M3I/ref=sr_1_10?crid=3M83EGKRMPHP2&dchild=1&keywords=arc+notebook+system&qid=1586894333&sprefix=arc+noteboo%2Caps%2C215&sr=8-10">Arc System desktop puncher</a> to be able to add pages. For the monthly dividers, I printed the months on card stock (see below) and used <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Colorful-Adhesive-Decorative-Monthly-Weekly/dp/B081G9NMNT/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=adhesive+monthly+planner+tabs&qid=1586894494&sr=8-1">adhesive monthly tabs</a>. I created dividers for Weekly Schedule, Counseling Lessons, and Notes.</span></div>

As I was looking for things to add to my school counseling website, I came across this website with 50 calm-down techniques for kids. This is great for any kids (adults, too) right now as we are quarantined in our homes.</div>

In particular, schooling from home. School counseling can be particularly challenging in this regard. In an effort to stay connected to the students and families at my school, I have created a website using Google Sites. I am adding information and activities every day to share with our families. If you are looking for a way to connect with your families, I recommend Google Sites. <br />

Julia Cook announced that she will be doing Facebook live readings of her books on Mondays and Fridays at 9:00am Central Time. What a great way to connect with our families! She is beginning on Friday, March 30 with <u>Wilma Jean the Worry Machine</u>.<br />

I thought this post would be a great one with which to start.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Teachers and staff in schools have very demanding and stressful jobs. We are often preaching about self-care without actually educating or providing resources in order to do so. We decided to change that at my school. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It has been a dream of mine to create a "calming," "relaxation," "zen," or whatever you want to call it, space for teachers and staff. I wanted the space to provide an unplugged getaway for anyone needing a few minutes of peace. My principal offered the only room available that we called the "phone booth" which is a very small space that was rarely used (see before picture below). Of course I took it! I would make it work! I added several things that would make the space more inviting and cozy. The transformation was more that I had hoped for!!! See for yourself!</div>

The first class is "Dealing with the ADD/ADHD Child." I don't really care for the title of the course because it sounds a bit negative to me but thought I would give it a shot to broaden my understanding of students with attention concerns and how to support the teachers who work with them.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The resources below are the required reading for the course. I just finished Module 1 out of 4 and the information is good so far. I would recommend these resources for new teachers or new counselors as the information is geared toward individuals just learning about ADHD or LD. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
These resources would also be very helpful to parents who are needing information on ADHD for their own children.<br />
<br />
I'm not sure what I will take next but I will keep you posted!!!<br />
<br />
Enjoy your summer!<br />

My counseling intern and I were brainstorming how to address some "squirmy" Kindergartner's who have a very difficult time staying in one spot and focused. We tried a lesson on self-regulation but that seemed a bit over their heads, and frankly not what they need. They need to practice being mindful - present, focused and relaxed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have decided to introduce the concept of mindfulness by reading <u>Squirmy Learns to be Mindful</u> by Joree Rosenblatt, M.A. This adorable book helps begin teaching what mindfulness is and how we practice this skill. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>"Bella couldn't wait to become a butterfly! She soon earned the nickname "Squirmy" from her mother because of her squirmy, impatient energy. Even when she was a tiny egg, Squirmy was bored and restless. Her mother kept reminder her that constantly wishing for what's next makes it difficult to enjoy what is happening right now! The she learned little tricks that would help her become more calm, focused and grateful. Soon, Squirmy relied that being mindful was easy to do , but tough to remember to do. So she kept practicing. Later, Squirmy began a very beautiful transformation and being mindful helped her make it through with a big smile."</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaBU18YskzTVQ4MxmW8kT1a-xN_yczHgCNLDmaCXhUDcoUbzPJ5eyaaroEIhc2nIfEFh0vduk8fbGwCJYDjLo3n_8oKjdCnudmhsccd6xnfTCZdo7eLDTBOg3qrXUfXS09_l-jfGsDlJ4/s1600/squirmy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaBU18YskzTVQ4MxmW8kT1a-xN_yczHgCNLDmaCXhUDcoUbzPJ5eyaaroEIhc2nIfEFh0vduk8fbGwCJYDjLo3n_8oKjdCnudmhsccd6xnfTCZdo7eLDTBOg3qrXUfXS09_l-jfGsDlJ4/s320/squirmy.jpg" width="248" /></a></div>
<br />
Each week after reading about Squirmy, we will be practicing being mindful. We will be using mindfulness activities from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8snGkhBF7ngDp1oJtx5VcjwatxZn8xLK">Cosmic Kids Zen Den</a> on YouTube to help practice. I like the videos on Zen Den because they are shorter in length making it attainable for Kindergartner's to complete successfully. My hope is that over time, our little buddies are able to focus their bodies and minds on learning in the classroom.Hanselor the Counselorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07797521737992016752noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2543226760950597089.post-57641174739655812682017-02-23T18:50:00.000-06:002017-02-23T18:50:10.815-06:00Interactive ResourcesI am always looking for new ideas for classroom counseling lessons, groups, and individual counseling sessions. I get into the rut of doing the same lessons and using the same resources all the time so I was searching for fresh lessons/ideas. I came across an interactive SMART Board series called "SMART GUIDANCE." Even though I loathe the term "guidance," the series is great. The series is by <a href="https://youthlight.com/index.php">Youthlight</a> which also has a TON of other amazing counseling resources (I have purchased from this site a lot throughout the years).<br />
<br />
I have had the "SMART GUIDANCE" Volume 1 in my collection for a couple of years and absolutely love it. My students are engaged because the lessons are cute and interactive. I have this one on CD but they now offer a downloadable versions which is how I ordered the others. Each program in the series is $49.95 which isn't bad for 10 or more lessons in each series. <a href="https://youthlight.com/index.php">Youthlight</a> also has each lesson available for <a href="https://youthlight.com/onlineAccess.php">individual download</a> for those who only want a lesson or two in a series. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I downloaded the following programs which makes it super easy to use them right away. They send you an email with an access code to activate the download. One of my access codes was missing from the email but <a href="https://youthlight.com/index.php">Youthlight</a> rectified that situation after a quick email. </div>

Social/emotional issues are on the rise and mental health professionals are doing what we can to support students who are struggling, not only in the school system, but in their daily lives. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One way to help students learn self-regulation is through yoga, mindfulness and guided relaxation. These exercises can help students with many social/emotional struggles, such as:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Anxiety</li>
<li>Anger</li>
<li>Depression</li>
<li>Focus/concentration</li>
<li>Confidence</li>
</ul>
<div>
I have found that many children struggle with just sitting still or laying and relaxing. Many children are going a mile a minute and have not learned the skills of slowing down and just being with themselves. Let's be honest, many adults struggle with the same things. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have found some YouTube channels that focus on yoga, mindfulness and guided relaxation FOR KIDS!!!!! Jaime at Cosmic Kids has done an amazing job of putting together some exercises that capture the attention of children while teaching vital self-regulatory strategies. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You will find links below to Cosmic Kids Yoga, Cosmic Kids Zen Den (mindfulness) and Cosmic Kids Peace Out (guided relaxation). I highly recommend these activities for any children you work with. I love them so much that I use them at home with my own children! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Check them out!</div>

We did a presentation specifically targeting the counselors in our district. Our focus was all of the ways that Google Drive can be used for counseling purposes.<br />
<br />
We explored each of the functions in Google Drive, from Docs to Drawings. There are step-by-step instructions on how to use each function for the beginners out there. We also listed several ways that we use each in our counseling programs.<br />
<br />
Below is the presentation if you are interested. Oh, and at the end there is a little about the T.E.A.R.S. Time Elapsed Analysis Reporting System that I have blogged about in the past.<br />

I came across this quote the other day and it really made me think about how important our jobs, as counselors, are when working with young children. We may not see the difference we make or the impact we may have on a child's life, but what we do IS important!!! This quote hits the nail on the head. It is essential that we work with children when they are young to help them grow into emotionally healthy adults. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Keep this thought in your mind on those crazy days when you think you are not making a difference or don't feel that you are doing enough. I think I will post this near my desk so I can be reminded daily that what I do matters and makes a difference!</div>

(Time Elapsed Analysis and Reporting System)</a> that exports your Microsoft Outlook calendar into a spreadsheet. I keep track of everything from my calendar to my notes in my Outlook calendar. I didn't use this Microsoft Excel Add-on until halfway through the school year and I am kicking myself for not using it sooner. I HIGHLY recommend using this add-on and starting from the beginning of the school year. Especially if you use Microsoft Outlook for your calendar.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I realized that I was doing double the work and taking a TON of extra time (at home in the evenings) inputting all of my information from my calendar into a Google form. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE MY GOOGLE FORMS!!! However, for this purpose, I was spending hours entering everything in when I already had it all in my calendar. My last blog post outlines how I use my Outlook calendar to help organize my counseling program. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have to keep track of every minute since I am working on my LPC hours and this is by far the best and easiest way to do it! I am able to manipulate the information in the excel spreadsheet just as in a google spreadsheet. The difference being only inputting information in one place and only one time.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also have to report about my counseling program at the end of the year such as; individual sessions conducted, amount of groups, how many students participated in groups, number of counseling lessons, etc. This was so easy to pull up and have my numbers within minutes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you have to do any reporting or time on task analysis AND you use Microsoft Outlook, GET THIS ADD-ON. It is only $3.95 and well worth more than that.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am putting links below for you to get more information and to watch a tutorial. </div>

I am going to show how I set up my calendar and how I use my calendar to plan individual, group and classroom lessons.<br />
<br />
First, EVERYTHING is in my calendar. If it is not in my calendar, it does not exist. I cannot remember everything I have to do in a day so I rely heavily on my calendar...with pop-up reminders.<br />
<br />
Here is a look at my calendar for this week (I'm sure you can relate with having very little time to breathe). It's a little blurry but you get the picture. Our district uses Outlook but you can do the same thing with Google or another calendar.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-dAAMs5a1Vg-wPrBj_9-TiCJb79L9BPTZcJXn_Ga-N0g78b7oZpKb0zTes0PCrz57JpshdxrVBSHv8BpU8mzWhuJq064q8YimfBebQWSjPavtD66FPdqP1VHAISYDrE5FmQ72Hfh-3tg/s1600/Calendar.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-dAAMs5a1Vg-wPrBj_9-TiCJb79L9BPTZcJXn_Ga-N0g78b7oZpKb0zTes0PCrz57JpshdxrVBSHv8BpU8mzWhuJq064q8YimfBebQWSjPavtD66FPdqP1VHAISYDrE5FmQ72Hfh-3tg/s640/Calendar.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;">I am going to point out several things about my calendar. Here we go.....</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><b><span style="color: lime;">1.</span></b> My calendar is color coded. I realize that I am a nerd and love things color coded but this actually really helps me know what is going on in my day at a quick glance.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><b><span style="color: lime;">2.</span></b> I do not put kids' names directly on my calendar. I do not want to run the risk of someone seeing names. I put their initials, grade level and teacher's initial. For example, EH 4H (Emily Hansen 4th grade, Mrs. Hansen's class). Now, I often forget with whom the initials belong so I put his/her name in the notes section of the appointment. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><span style="color: lime;"><b>3.</b></span> When I plan a meeting or a lesson, I am able to send an invitation to other people and they will also get a pop-up reminder. This is great for teachers to remember when they have counseling lessons.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><span style="color: lime;"><b>4.</b></span> </span>I recently started planning within each appointment, as well. This is great because as soon as the reminder pops up, I open the appointment and voila...my plans! Below is a picture of how it looks. (I also have the students names who are participating in a group but I took them out for this pic). I try to plan ahead as much as possible so I cross out the lesson when it has been completed. I do the same thing for classroom lessons and individual sessions. If I have a YouTube video, I am able to put the link right in here. What a time saver!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizhy3TtA93RgTvEJQkG6IlSIP7iah0xbr2WZGNZTbYdF0p4gd-80rlvLQfUnyWEyNd21-ctqb4MOqJ8DWSeT1y2U6X6CX6R-L5CGdYOJYeppTxps07VOpqHpk4y79FdYINMcesjUWkbHU/s1600/Calendar+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="418" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizhy3TtA93RgTvEJQkG6IlSIP7iah0xbr2WZGNZTbYdF0p4gd-80rlvLQfUnyWEyNd21-ctqb4MOqJ8DWSeT1y2U6X6CX6R-L5CGdYOJYeppTxps07VOpqHpk4y79FdYINMcesjUWkbHU/s640/Calendar+2.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you have been following blog, you know that I am all about time saving and efficiency. I strive to find the best and easiest ways to organize and save time. I am able to access my calendar at any computer so it makes it so much easier to keep my plans within my calendar. I used to have papers galore in just plans alone. This even makes it easier to plan at home. No more lugging binders of plans back and forth. I can just open my calendar and plan my whole week (as much as we can plan) in one place!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope this helps you in your organizing endeavors! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Please let us know if you have any tips or tricks for keeping your plans or calendars!!</div>

I have had rough school year and have not posted in a long time. Not to air my dirty laundry, but I lost my mom a few months ago. I have been trying to keep myself together for my family and work. I haven't done the best job but I am determined to get back into the swing.<br />
<br />
I will start posting weekly tips of things that have worked for me as well as some weekly thoughts. I hope you stay with me as I get back to blogging!!!<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><b>First thought of the week...</b></span><br />
Take care of YOURSELF!!! As counselors, we take care of other people and support their mental health and often over look our own mental health. Don't be afraid to take a break. That is what I have been doing to regain my mental health so that I can be the most effective with others. Do things for yourself like exercise, read a good book, take a walk, snuggle with a pet, etc.<br />
<br />
I love yoga and have recently restarted a routine. It is so great for centering and calming your mind and spirit. My son has even joined in. We call it, "7 o'clock yoga time." He is very disappointed if we have to miss it. (He has ADHD so this really helps him learn to focus on his body and the here and now. <br />
<br />
Whatever you enjoy doing for yourself, make it a priority! <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
YOU DESERVE IT AND ARE WORTH IT!!!!!</div>
